Cakes, cakes, and more cakes

I feel like I have lived in the kitchen for the past 4 days. Which I don't usually mind if it wasn't for Ava sneaking bites here and Kael knocking over frosting there. They really do love to help. Although one time (a few weeks ago) I was making some cookies or a cake for something and Ava came over and brought a chair. I don't mind her helping me, it's really fun. I measured out the sugar and let her pour it in and then moved on. Well then I realized she kept sneaking little bits of sugar in there now and again, which was not actually a huge deal. Well then she did it again and I thought to myself, "Where is she getting all this sugar from?" So I start looking around and can't find anything. I was so confused until I noticed her shying away from me anytime I got close. Bingo! I opened her hand to reveal....the salt shaker! I don't even know where she got it from but all that "sugar" she had been putting in was in fact salt. Which did ruin it. Oh well!

So my good friend Jenny is my first official customer! She ordered a cake for a cake walk for her daughter's class at school. And I have some explaining to do. My initial goal was to make a spider cake. A dome cake for the body, and some mean spider legs. Well I did make a spider cake. And last night as I was putting the finishing touches on (the legs) my filling tube broke! She's picking it up this morning so I frantically thought of something, anything I could use instead! I literally could not think of anything. I guess my brain stopped functioning at that point. Anyway, I did finally get some legs on there, but it's not nearly as cool as it should be. It will taste really good though! Chocolate cake, with a raspberry coulis center, with a cream cheese chocolate frosting. At least hopefully the kid likes it who takes it home. I won't post pics of the cake but I will show you how it look in my fridge:

Well Andre's birthday went over very well I think. He woke up to banana pancakes, and then at work they decorated his desk! Which I thought was really nice. And then they all sang to him and ordered pizza. And then right as he was leaving I sent him a singing telegram! I hear it was very cool. He told me he was so embarassed (which was never my intention). He said he was sitting in the lobby, waiting to leave, and he looked out the window and saw this lady walking up with a guitar and a harmonica. He thought to himself, "You're definitely in the wrong place." (He works at a law firm). She walked in and the receptionist said, "Can I help you?" And the lady said, "Yes, I'm looking for Andre." And his boss turns around and says, "Oh Andre? Yeah he's right here." And Andre's thinking, "No way is this happening." And then she busted out in her blues rendition of "Happy Birthday." He says she was so loud the entire office came over and he turned bright red! Well I'm glad I did it! So then he came home and we had ricotta gnocchi that he requested (I've made it before and I actually thought it turned out way better before!) and then for dessert I made him red velvet cheesecake. The cheesecake factory sells this cheesecake and theirs is way better! Even though Andre assured me that mine was better. And the kids gave him the movie karate kid, and some hair stuff, and he got some clothes and a new harmonica! He has been so upset since he lost his harmonica in the move. Anyway here is his dessert:

It would look so much better if I had cut it with a clean knife. It's two layers of red velvet cake and two layers of cheesecake with a buttercream frosting (and I actually HATE buttercream, but this one is not so bad). I made this one for him because a long time ago we had a gift card to the cheesecake factory for like $50 so we were able to have dinner and dessert! Of course why would you go there and not have dessert? They were doing a special "Stefanie's Red Velvet Cheesecake". And no, not me. I guess they had a contest for a new recipe and hers won. Anyway I told Andre we should try it and he looked disgusted and said absolutely not. Well I ordered it anyway and he did have one bite when it came. And then another and then another! We both thought it was great. So I copied them for his bday.

Anyway guess we got for free off of craigslist?

It's kind of crazy what people will just give away. Can you see Kael in there? Speaking of that little guy he is just hanging out this morning. He is not feeling real well.

Even when he's sick he's still cute! Well have a great day everyone!
